Dr. Deidre Byrne and the Medical Missionaries Branch of the Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts

The Medical Missionaries were chosen at the MCCW-Worldwide Conference in October 2008 and is our official charity until the next Worldwide Conference in 2010.

The Medical Missionaries Branch of the Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts are a Catholic medical order that provides free and loving medical care for the poor and uninsured, as well as priests and religious throughout the world. They are also Medical Defenders of Life from the moment of conception until natural death. The Medical Missionaries are medical contemplatives in action and promote the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, catechesis and works of charity through their work as doctors, nurses, teachers, counselors, pharmacists, social workers and more. Their labor of love as medical sisters will continually be nourished by their prayerful lives, centered on the Eucharist, for the Honor and Glory of God. As a professed Sister and experienced physician (and COL in the Army Reserves), Dr. Deidre Byrne is ideally suited to bring her surgical and family practice experience to the poorest of the poor and uninsured in northeast Washington, D.C. and throughout the world. Dr. Byrne has donated countless surgeries. Some major surgical cases she has donated include thyroidectomies for cancer, goiters, mastectomies for breast cancer, colectomies, emergency c-sections, emergency surgery for ruptured uterus, appendectomies, colonoscopies, hernia surgeries, laproscopic and open ventral hernias. Some minor surgical cases, Dr. Byrne has performed include excisions of breast masses, lesions on the face and extremities, infected wounds and care for burn victims. These are just a few examples of what Dr. Byrne has donated to the poor and uninsured in places far and wide in the most dire need of medical care, in Africa, the Holy Land, Italy and Washington D.C.

All funds contributed by MCCW will help provide for the operating expenses (travel, food, equipment, etc) of Dr. Byrne and the Medical Missionaries, allowing them to take their services directly to the poorest places in most need of quality medical care.
